The Most Memorable Moments from the 2013 Emmy Awards

This year's Emmy Awards were a mixed bag of happy (Amy and Tina!), sad (Cory Moneith tribute), hilarious (Stephen Colbert), and Shemar Moore (possibly intoxicated backstage). Relive the highlights from TV's biggest night ahead.

1. When the show started 5 minutes late because of football.
The Jets game ran long so the Emmys started off a bit late. Of course, this was perfect fodder for the start of the show and an extended montage of footage from last year so everyone could scurry to their seats.

2. When Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were the best part of the opening number.
Neil Patrick Harris hosted, but the gals stole the show. They hilariously crawled to the stage (like Jennifer Lawrence at the Oscars) and obviously worked in twerking references. "I come to award shows for the twerking," Fey said. Her blond sidekick recommended NPH take off his pants. If you were really looking for either of these things, the iHeartRadio Music Festival was probably more your scene this weekend.

For the record, there was no singing or dancing in the opening number. WTF.

3. When Merritt Weaver gave the shortest acceptance speech ever.
The Nurse Jackie star was definitely the underdog for Best Supporting Actress, apparently even in her eyes. The flustered actressed got up on the stage and said "thank you so much" about four times before ending her speech with "I gotta go. Bye!"

4. When Julia-Louis Dreyfus made Tony Hale carry her sparkly bag.
Right after Tony Hale's Best Supporting Actor win for Veep, Dreyfus got her lead actress win for the show. So, she got into her Selina role and made Gary carry her sparkly purse to the stage. Then she "forgot" to thank him during her speech. Their co-star Anna Chlumsky pretended to be texting at her seat while all of this was going down.

5. When Jim Parsons won his third Emmy.
The Big Bang Theory star won back-to-back Emmys for lead actor in 2010 and 2011 and he was back on top Sunday night. He got a little teary-eyed on stage as he accepted the award and we all went "Awww" when he called partner Todd Spiewak his "favorite person on earth."

6. When Elton John seriously sparkled.
As Elton John usually does. He performed his new song "Home Again" in honor of his late friend Liberace and the HBO biopic Behind the Candelabra.

7. When Anna Gunn got advice from Bryan Cranston.
Gunn, AKA Skyler White, won her first Emmy for her role in Breaking Bad and told the whole world: "Bryan Cranston just told me to breathe!" She managed to thank the usual suspects and "mad genius Vince Gilligan."

 8. When Jane Lynch paid tribute to Cory Monteith.
Jane Lynch delivered a touching speech about her late Glee co-star. "From the first time that you saw Cory, he had a star quality and a genuine sweetness that made it impossible not to fall in love with him," she said. "And millions did fall in love with Cory. I'm here to say that all that warmth and that charm, that open-hearted quality that we loved in Cory was no act. Cory was a beautiful soul. He was not perfect, which many of us here can relate to. His death is a tragic remind of the rapacious, senseless destruction that is brought on by addiction. Tonight we remember Cory for all he was and mourn the loss for all that could have been."

9. When Jeff Daniels made a funny.
He won for Newsroom and was quite surprised. "Well crap," he said onstage. "The last thing I won was a few years ago for Squid and the Whale. I won the Best Actor Over 50 from the AARP. With all due respect to the AARP, this is better."

10. When Claire Danes got mushy.

No surprise that she won for lead actress in a drama. We just loved how much she loves her hubby Hugh Dancy. "My husband. My love. My crush," she said. "Thank you for making me so whole and so happy so I can be so entirely unhappy in the land of make believe."

11. When the audience gave television icon Bob Newhart a standing ovation.
Newhart finally won his first Emmy (for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series on the Big Bang Theory) this year, over five decades after his first nomination. "I don't know if that's a compliment or if you're just trying to rub it in," he joked.

12. When neither of the Breaking Bad men won and fans were like "Screw it, I'm turning to AMC anyway."
The Twitter-verse declared the Emmys boring and worthless after Bobby Canavale and Jeff Daniels beat out Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston for Male in a Drama awards, which was kind of convenient since Breaking Bad was starting up anyway and who cares.

13. When Stephen Colbert embarrassed his wife.
S
hortly after Claire Danes' super sweet mention of her husband, Colbert made his wife Evie bright red. "Personally, I want to thank my wife, Evie, for being so cruel and sexy," he said during his win for writing for a variety show. She laughed, blushed like crazy, and then put her head down. She's got to be used to this sort of thing by now, though.
14. When Derek Hough won an Emmy.
Yes, the Derek Hough of Dancing with the Stars and Julianne Hough sibling fame. He said "Holy crap" onstage during his speech for the choreography win and made sure to thank all of his sisters.

15. When Stephen Colbert was awesome again.
He won for outstanding variety series and paid homage to his partner in crime, Jon Stewart. "I personally have to thank my friend and my brother Jon Stewart, who said, 'We should do a show together where you are a professional idiot.' Jon never told me how good this feels actually," he said.
He also got sentimenal when he thanked his mom, who passed away earlier this year. He told the crowd: "I want to thank my mom for not worrying about me and for believing I would be OK."

16. When Edie Falco paid tribute to James Gandolfini.
"Jim was really quite different" than his mobster TV character," she said. "He had tremendous warmth and heart. He was kind. He was uniquely generous. One got the feeling that Jim was never entirely comfortable with all the attention he got ... usually because he said it every chance he got."
She added: "You all knew James Gandolfini the actor. I was lucky enough to know Jim the man. For 10 years as his close colleague and pretend life partner, and for many years as his friends. And it's Jim the man, the very dear man, that I will miss most of all."

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Show17. When Michael Douglas hugged Matt Damon on his way to accept the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or Movie.Douglas promptly launched into some gay jokes. "This was a two-hander," Douglas quipped, "and Matt, you're only as good as your other hand … You deserve half of this. So do you want the bottom or the top?" He went on to thank his wife (!) and children, including his oldest son Cameron, who's currently in prison.

18. When Michael Douglas confused us all about his relationship with Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Are they together or not? They announced their separation in late August, but the actor thanked his estranged wife during his acceptance speech for Behind the Candelabra. He also wore his wedding band on the red carpet. We really hope they work it out.

19. When Will Ferrell presented Best Comedy Series and Best Drama Series with his three blond kids in their soccer gear.
They looked legit bored. Also, nice cargo shorts, Will!

20. When Modern Family creator Steve Levitan thanked his bullies.
"Well this may be the saddest Emmys of all time but we could not be happier," Levitan admitted as he accepted the award for Best Comedy Series. He then thanked everyone who made fun of the way he ran — including gym teachers and "popular kids."

21. When Breaking Bad won Best Drama Series and everyone knew it was RIGHT.
Betsy Brandt, who plays Marie on the terribly brilliant show, sweetly clutched at her onscreen husband Dean Norris' arm as creator Vince Gilligan announced that any of the nominated shows could've easily won, this being the "Golden age of television." Twitter rejoices.

22. When Twitter went crazy about Shemar Moore. The hunky Criminal Minds star was definitely the talk of Twitter throughout the show. Comments about his drunken zany backstage comments were absolutely hilarious. Here are a few examples:
