High school movies tend to paint a pretty dismal picture of life in high school, but at least they're quippy! Here are some of our favorite movie quotes about high school.
From the Mouths of Students
High school can be a rough place, but if you're having a particularly tough time there, Hollywood is here to make sure you don't feel alone. The trials and tribulations of mass matriculation have been a favorite subject of screenwriters since at least the '70s. Check out some of our favorite nuggets of big screen high school wisdom ahead.
1. Easy A
Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone): "That's the beauty of being a girl in high school. People hear you had sex once and BAM, you're a bimbo."
2. Never Been Kissed
Josie (Drew Barrymore): "All of you people, there is a big world out there... bigger than prom, bigger than high school and it won't matter if you were the prom queen, the quarterback of the football team, or the biggest nerd in school. Find out who you are and try not to be afraid of it."
3. Clueless
Cher (Alicia Silverstone): "Searching for a boy in high school is as useless as searching for meaning in a Pauly Shore movie."
4. Mean Girls
Janis (Lizzy Caplan) on the school hierarchy: "You got your freshmen, ROTC guys, preps, J.V. jocks, Asian nerds, cool Asians, Varsity jocks, unfriendly black hotties, girls who eat their feelings, girls who don't eat anything, desperate wannabes, burnouts, sexually active band geeks... and the greatest people you will ever meet, and the worst. Beware of plastics."
5. Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick): "The key to faking out the parents is the clammy hands. It's a good non-specific symptom; I'm a big believer in it. A lot of people will tell you that a good phony fever is a dead lock, but, uh... you get a nervous mother, you could wind up in a doctor's office. That's worse than school. You fake a stomach cramp, and when you're bent over, moaning and wailing, you lick your palms. It's a little childish and stupid, but then, so is high school."
6. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Charlie (Logan Lerman): "High school? Bull--it. The cafeteria is called the Nutrition Center, people wear their letter jackets even when it's 98 degrees out. And why do they give out letter jackets to marching band? It's not a sport. We all know it."
7. Prom
Lloyd Taylor (Nicholas Braun): "The prom is like the Olympics of high school. You wait four years, three people have a good time and everybody else gets to live on with shattered dreams."
8. Pretty in Pink
Duckie (Jon Cryer): "It's the end of the month, they're out of toilet seat covers!"
9. She's the Man
Principal Gold (David Cross): "Getting to know the opposite sex are we? Male female dynamics, all that. Sexual tension... it's all part of the high school experience... Continue, continue, please. But keep it cleaned up. Abstinence is key, abstinence is the best way to not is to not."
10. Grease
Patty (Susan Buckner): "Oh I just love the first day of school, don't you?"
Rizzo (Stockard Channing): "It's the biggest thrill of my life."
11. 17 Again
Mike O' Donnell (Matthew Perry): "Come on, man! Don't you ever wanna go back and do high school again?"
Ned Freedman (Thomas Lennon): "No. I'm rich and no one has shoved my head in a toilet today!"
12. 21 Jump Street
Jenko (Channing Tatum): "The three keys of coolness in high school, by Jenko. One, don't try hard at anything. Okay? Two, make fun of people who do try. Three, be handsome. Four, if anyone steps to you on the first day of school, you punch them directly in the face. Five, drive a kick-ass car."
13. Jawbreaker
Fern (Judy Greer, pictured right) about Courtney (Rose McGowan, center): "She's so evil... and she's only in high school!"
14. The Breakfast Club
Voiceover: "You see us as you want to see us — in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. You see us as a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess and a criminal. Correct? That's the way we saw each other at 7:00 this morning. We were brainwashed."
15. Heathers
J.D. (Christian Slater): "People will look at the ashes of Westerburg and say, 'Now there's a school that self-destructed, not because society didn't care, but because the school was society.' Now that's deep."
16. Weird Science
Lisa (Kelly LeBrock): "You know, there's going to be sex, drugs, rock 'n' roll... chips, dips, chains, whips... You know, your basic high school orgy type of thing. I mean, uh, I'm not talking candlewax on the nipples, or witchcraft or anything like that, no, no, no. Just a couple of hundred kids running around in their underwear, acting like complete animals."
17. Dazed and Confused
Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey): "That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age."
18. Pump Up the Volume
Mark (Christian Slater): "We're all worried, we're all in pain. That just comes with having eyes and having ears. But just remember one thing - it can't get any worse, it can only get better. High school is the bottom, being a teenager sucks, but that's the point, surviving it is the whole point. Quitting is not going to make you stronger, living will. So just hang on and hang in there."
