Demi Lovato's biological father, Patrick, has passed away, confirmed the singer's rep this weekend (via Us Weekly). He had been battling cancer since at least 2011, when he mentioned the disease in an interview with Radar Online.

Demi hasn't commented on her dad's death, but reportedly skipped an X Factor photo shoot Saturday. Her older sister Dallas wrote on Twitter Saturday: "Rest in peace daddy I love you" and fans made #RIPPatrickLovato a trending topic.
The superstar's mother, Diana De La Garza, also tweeted: "Thank you for the outpouring of love and prayers. Y'all are amazing!"
Demi's relationship with her dad had been strained for years and it was the subject of her hit song "For the Love of a Daughter" from her 2011 album Unbroken. A year before the song was released, while Demi sought treatment for emotional and physical issues, her dad spoke out to the press, much to her dismay.
In 2009, she opened up about her dad in an interview: "The last time I talked to him was two years ago. You try to have faith in somebody, even when you're the last person that believes in him. But when somebody lets you down after you've been the only one there for them, and so many times, you don't know what else to do."
