Selena Gomez is a superstar plain and simple. She's been a TV star on Disney's Wizards of Waverly Place, a movie star in a number of films notably the up-coming Spring Breakers, a music star with massive hits like "Love You Like A Love Song", she's launched her own perfume and clothing line and is of course all over the gossip pages due to her relationship with Justin Bieber. All of which obviously keeps her pretty darn busy. Yet she still manages to find time for the perhaps the most important thing of all that she does - donate her time as a UNICEF Ambassador.
In that role she traveled to Ghana back in 2009 and in the June 2012 issue of InStyle magazine Australia she relates this story:
I went to Ghana with UNICEF, and I was struck by how eager the kids were to get an education. That's something we take for granted in the United States. There have been many times when I've said I hate homework, I hate math - but they're literally begging for it over there. I met a teenager who was part of a group that traveled from village to village protesting the lack of education, and he once had a machine gun pointed at his head as a result. I was completely floored to hear he went through that, and at the age of 14! Everyday there's one little thing I'm complaining about, whether it's my hair or that I'm waking up too early, but my encounters with the people of Ghana have made me snap out of it. I encourage everyone, especially younger people, to help kids who are less fortunate than we are.In the last few months Selena has also helped create awareness for the UNICEF Tap Project 2012 with a blog post on March 16th on the UNICEF site, created a video on April 19th encouraging her fans to donate to aid the children caught up in the humanitarian crisis in Sahel and visited the UNICEF Emergency Response Office in New York on May 4th to film a video to further raise awareness about the crisis in Sahel. And she's been Tweeting about it to her legion of fans and helping to direct them to the Facebook page where they can help.
